Protect against ransomware with Veeam backups

As the trend of working from home looks set to continue, hackers and cybercriminals are increasingly targeting businesses via email, websites, and ransomware. If your business is unable to send emails, receive orders or invoice customers (even for a matter of a few hours), it can have a profound impact on the faith your customers have in your business and, ultimately, your profit margin.

To protect your business against cyber security threats, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has recommended a series of easy to implement measures. These measures won’t make your device impenetrable, but they will provide adequate protection against most hackers, who will turn their attention elsewhere and search for more vulnerable targets:

– Create a strong password and use a separate password for your email

– Use a combination of three random words to create a password

– Securely save your passwords in your preferred browser

– Turn on two-factor authentication

– Regularly update your devices (automatic updates)

– Backup your data

In the unfortunate event that a hacker does access your data, a robust backup solution like Veeam would be the ideal response to protect your business. Veeam employs a ‘3 2 1’ backup best practice; they recommend that you keep three copies of your data, using at least two different media types, with one copy stored in a completely different data centre or in the cloud. In particular, the all-new secure Linux repository, available in V10 or V11, provides a great defence against ransomware.
